Direct Action at US/Mexico Border
Last spring, a group of organizers with The People United in consultation with local groups organizing in the border region, implemented a direct action to confront the militarized border and wake our own communities up to the realities of immigration. While a support team coordinated logistic and media support, two activists entered Mexico and then climbed a fence to cross back into the US without carrying any documentation. They then walked three days through the desert along well-traveled migrant trails before carrying a banner through a US Border Patrol Checkpoint. The action was broadly reported on in English and Spanish language print, radio and television outlets.
The real work begins now that the action is completed. There is a much to do in educating our communities about the roots of forced migration and the places we can look to begin to build true security. We have a short video documentary, a puppet show and are in the process of developing an interactive workshop exploring these questions with groups of all levels of experience and awareness.
